I am developing large-volume electron microscopy techniques for mapping the entire brains of vertebrates in three dimensions.
Understanding learning and memory in animals and machines requires detailed knowledge of neural circuit architectures and computational principles. These maps will reveal, at the cellular level, the neural circuits of the hippocampus as well as their inputs and outputs. By comparing maps across phyla, I hope to identify common structural and computational principles that form the evolutionary basis for learning and memory. This work will result in new insights into the hippocampus for use in treating neurodegenerative diseases and improving artificial intelligence.
